The Serengeti Grassland Nursery

The brief for this nursery was for a design that would work for both a boy and a girl, so from the start we took care to choose colours, furniture and objects that would speak to any child , no matter the gender.

Collaborating with artist Jen Collier for the second time to create the wall mural, the concept here was to design a kinetic Serengeti grassland scene filled with animals, movement and depth. Working within a palette of smoky green, mustard, soft grey and charcoal, we asked for the animals to be walking, jumping, flying, running and sleeping amongst dry parched soft yellow grasslands and under lush green tree canopies.

Jen created an incredible dramatic scene- a family of elephants drinking at a water hole, a sleeping leopard draped along a tree branch, prancing antelope amongst the grass, a swooping eagle in the clouds, an elegant ostrich walking majestically in the foreground and a snake with its twisting patterned body hanging from a tree. Her painterly colourful style and soft brush strokes make for a stunning back drop to a black antennae double wall light which bathes a black velvet scalloped armchair in soft light.

Built in storage and space to display beautiful objects and books was a priority so we designed these elements bespoke to have as little impact on the floor area possible to maximise space for the baby to play and crawl. Organic elements such as the rattan toy baskets and cream tassel ceiling light soften the space while ceramic animal head handles and a cheeky brass turtle add a playful charm.
