The Eclectic Colour Pop Kitchen

When the home owners bought this property, a brand-new Italian kitchen had been installed 2 years previously, so my design was not a full kitchen fit out but a remodelling of one side of the space.

As beautiful and functional as the kitchen is, the brief was to inject the space with an eclectic, playful, colourful, energy, fit for a bustling lively family.

When I designed this space, I was asking the question 'who is going to use this room and what are they going to do there?'. It was established that the space was going to be the main family room- the only room with a connection to the garden and the area of the house that would be filled with toys and high chairs, laughter and luscious aromas of food in the oven.

It would be the place where the family would snuggle down on that gorgeous spiced orange velvet sofa on a lazy rainy Saturday afternoon watching Disney with the kids, drinking mugs of tea with an uninterrupted view of their lovely garden. It would be for the evenings where family and friends would pop by for a wee glass of wine and quick bite around the informal dining table before shooting off to put the kids to bed.

But for me, the main success here is the bespoke shelving design. Not only does it incorporate alcove seating at the dining table and act as an anchor for sofa, it also allows pockets of space to display the family’s collection of beautiful objects, books and curiosities to excite and stimulate the kiddies.

Filling the space with expressions of who they are has created an environment for growth and happiness.
